Move in day at Redwood University was a bustle of activity like so many others at universities throughout the country. Late August's heat had not subsided and given way to the cooling of September and her fall tendencies. Of course, the freshmen didn't notice the incongruity between the beautiful summer weather and the traditional autumnal atmosphere that surrounded the return to academics. They were too busy hauling boxes of possessions up flights of stairs and packing them into tiny elevators and getting to know their new best friends for life and everything else that was the whirlwind of move-in day.

One such wide eyed freshman was Kyle Cranston. He surveyed the dorm room in which he wound spend the better part of the next nine months, minus five and a half weeks that constituted Thanksgiving, winter break, and spring break rolled together. On the left side of the room was a neatly made bed, pictures pinned into a cork board covered that had been pockmarked by thousands of pushpins over decades of use, a closet and drawers neatly stuffed full of clothing (this day being the only one of the next nine months that it would be so neat since it would now lack the organization of Mom from henceforth), and a desk on which rested a lamp and printer that were obviously eagerly awaiting erudite pursuits.

That side of the room belonged to Young Park, Kyle's roommate. He was currently off having a final lunch with his family before they departed for home. Kyle's side of the room consisted of the same basic furniture, a bare mattress on the wooden bed, and a wall completely devoid of any decoration at all. Kyle sighed at the blank canvas in front of him. Instead of feeling excited about the fresh beginning that lay before him like seemingly everyone else on his floor, the only thing on Kyle's mind was how intimidating the blank canvas that was his dorm room in front of him was. All his life Kyle had moved from one thing to another. There had been no new starts, just a series of progressions. He was pretty sure even when he went into preschool that he'd already known the kids there from previous meetings.

But that wasn't the case this time. He was the only one from his high school was attending prestigious Redwood University, halfway up the coast from the small city where he'd been born and raised. Kyle knew absolutely nobody at Redwood—and to be perfectly honest that scared him.

Still surveying his empty half of the room while his parents had gone back down to grab more boxes of his possessions from their car, Kyle ran a hand through his short brown hair. Some might call it messy, though Kyle preferred to think of it as strategically tousled. It wasn't that he didn't care about what people thought about how he looked. Kyle just chose not to follow prevailing fashions. He thought that his hairstyle said, "I don't care what I look like…but I don't think this looks bad. Don't you agree?" The rest of Kyle's laid back, casual style backed up his vibe. His thin rimmed glasses added an air of intelligence mixed with adorable nerdiness, though not enough to be weird, just slightly endearing to the right sort of person.

Most striking about Kyle was his stature. Despite being the younger brother of a 5'11" high school track star, Kyle had topped out at 5'1". Throughout high school his mother had tried to keep his spirits up by saying, "You know, I knew a guy who grew a foot after high school. You'll hit your growth spurt soon enough. And even if you don't, who cares?" The problem was that Kyle knew that a lot of people cared. In fact, exactly 55% of Redwood University cared: the female undergraduate population. It had been through plenty of experience, sometimes painful, that Kyle had learned that women did not like to be taller than their dates. For Kyle, that meant the only girls in high school he could date were freshman girls who were late bloomers—and by February they were usually an inch taller than him. Of course, that didn't take into account Sally Toffey, the cheerleader who was so short and light that she got thrown into the air for all of the stunts. However, cheerleaders had never been in Kyle's league and Sally was included. Though there was always the chance that Kyle's growth spurt might hit any time now, he didn't think it was a very likely possibility.

To go along with being "vertically challenged", as Kyle would say in his more jesting moods, he was also a wiry guy. Clocking in at 110 pounds, Kyle was not unhealthily thin, but there was little body fat on him. This didn't help Kyle's opinion of his physical state at all. Perhaps if he'd been a buff short guy he wouldn't have minded. If he'd been a really thin tall guy, that would have been good too. No, he was a short and thin guy. There were days when Kyle felt like he wasn't even there. Perhaps that was why he had never been a very outgoing person. Though by no means an introvert, Kyle rarely strayed too far outside his circle of close friends who knew how wonderful of a person he was.

And I really should have thought about that before leaving them all behind to come here… Kyle thought with dismay. However, he really did want to go to Redwood. It had a great undergraduate business program with many of its graduates going on to top flight MBA programs. Even without that, business administration majors were vigorously recruited by top flight companies. Besides, the tuition check had already been cashed. He was just going to have to make the best of it.

"Kyle!" his mother said with surprise as she bustled into the room carrying two cardboard boxes, "Why, you haven't even unpacked anything yet!"

"Just taking it all in Mom," Kyle said, surveying 85 square feet that comprised his side of the room—his home for the next nine months, "Just taking it in."

***

Directly across the hall, Rachael Welch smiled to herself at all the freshmen scurrying about. That had been her exactly one year ago when she'd moved in for her first year at Redwood. It had been the first day of one of the best years of her life. In fact, she'd made so many friends and had such a wonderful time that she'd nearly trampled people to sign up for another year in the dorms. She knew it was kind of lame, especially since most of her friends were moving into apartments or sorority houses, but Rachael had this instinct that this was the right place for her.

As she watched all the overexcited freshmen trot through the halls with parents in tow, Rachael was beginning to wonder whether or not she was wrong about how much fun this was going to be. Sure, she had her best friend Andrea Blaine rooming with her, but there didn't appear to be a single sophomore on the entire floor to join them in their repeat dorm adventure. Somehow Rachael had this feeling that she was going to find that freshmen were a little more annoying now that she wasn't one of them anymore. Still, she might be pleasantly surprised. When she'd been a freshman, the floor's resident sophomore, Kelli Babcock, had seemed like she'd enjoyed herself quite a bit. It was probably just beginning of the year jitters. Everybody had them. The only difference between the freshmen and the sophomores was that the sophomores were smart enough to acknowledge they had them.

Rachael had to admit that there was a certain humor factor to sitting in her chair, feet up on the bed, watching the freshmen scurry past in all manner of states. Some were carrying boxes that were clearly over packed and too heavy for them. Others were rushing down the hall because they'd just remembered something was in the car that they couldn't live without and they had to get it before their parents left. Others still had their parents around but obviously desperately wished that they were already on the road so they could begin looking cool and making friends with people. Rachael found it funny only because she'd been there before and it was much more entertaining to watch having already gone through it all herself.

"What's so entertaining?" Andrea asked with a curious smile.

"The freshmen," Rachael said nodding her chin in the direction of the open door, "Man, I can't believe that was us a year ago."

"Look at them. Their whole lives ahead of them," Andrea said.

"Not like us geezers," Rachael said, "Oh to be young again."

Andrea couldn't contain her laughter any further and Rachael had to crack a smile at herself as well. This was precisely the sort of humor that Rachael's friends loved about her. She was such an energetic and sociable person that she stood out in nearly any situation. Of course, it was pretty easy for Rachael to stand out seeing as she topped out at 5'10". She had been "the tall girl" her entire life and accordingly Rachael took it as perfectly natural. Sure, it was a little awkward when you had to look down at some of the boys, but it was just something that Rachael was used to. It wasn't like she could get any shorter if she tried, so there was no point in being undone about it.

Naturally, as a tall girl, Rachael was no waif. Like so many other tall women, Rachael was built broadly, though not so much as to be fat. It just made sense that she wouldn't fit into size 4 jeans. Rachael was more of a size 8 kind of girl (albeit a tight size 8) when she arrived a year ago at Redwood University weighing 157 pounds. While she was a little on the chubby side, it wasn't really that much. Over the course of her freshman year, Rachael had fallen prey to the infamous Freshman 15. Now that she was making her own dietary choices at the all-you-can-eat dining halls, Rachael simply went with whatever sounded best. Some nights that was a cheeseburger, other nights it was a heaping bowl of pasta, and sometimes it was a salad (but only one with plenty of dressing on it). Then there had been all the late night study sessions where Rachael had discovered that there was actually a fourth meal in the day when bands of her hallmates would traipse to the nearby dining outlet to get pizza, buffalo wings, pizza, and all sorts of other delicious food able to be conveniently purchased on the student dining plan that everyone in the dorms automatically received.

In the blur of college life Rachael simply did not think about how much she ate. Instead, she just ate. Her tummy was pleased with this new diet and as Rachael found herself slipping into a larger pair of jeans she just shrugged it off. She was having too much fun to worry about putting on some weight. However, by the end of the school year she realized that she'd gained some very nice curves as a result of her gain. Though she'd never been a small breasted woman, Rachael now sported some delectable melons. Accordingly, Rachael never hesitated to show off some tasteful, yet tantalizing, cleavage. Her belly was wide and soft, though it wasn't a full fledged gut. Her hips were wide and sexy, swaying from side to side with each step and behind her she had a plush bum that was the most exercised part of her since she spent a lot of time sitting on it. Rachael's thighs were comparably sized to support the bulk above it. Only a little daylight peeked between those wobbling pillars of flesh.

Though she was undeniably heavy, Rachael was not so fat as to be unattractive. In fact, it was quite the opposite: Rachael was an undeniable fox. Her straight brown hair framed an attractive face with deep brown eyes that still sparkled frequently. So what if she was a little heavy around the middle…and the hips…and the thighs…Rachael still turned a number of heads with her hourglass figure. And the truth was, Rachael found that she rather enjoyed her curvy figure. After all, what wasn't great about the fact that she could eat whatever she wanted and get big boobs and sexy hips as part of the package? Sure, there was that little matter of the belly in between—okay, it wasn't so little these days, but it was a tradeoff that Rachael was more than willing to make.

"Well, as fun as it is, I think that I've had enough of gawking at freshmen," Andrea said, "Besides, we actually have to live with them so we shouldn't stare too long. They might think we're rude. I'm going to go see Jeff. They're going to have a start of the year party at Sigma Rho."

"And you never miss a Sigma Rho party," Rachael said. Andrea's boyfriend Jeff was a member of the Sigma Rho Phi fraternity and that meant she was on the guest list for anything worthwhile that was going down there.

"You going to come? There'll be plenty of guys there. Might find one that you like," Andrea asked. Due to Rachael's status as a best friend she was always on the list, though she didn't show up with the same regularity. Still, she'd been known to party hardy on more than one occasion.

"Eh, we'll see. If I need to escape the press of freshmen I'll be there," Rachael said. She wasn't much for frat brothers, but she tried not to be too judgmental of them. She had plenty of friends who were in frats that were great guys, but when they all got together for some reason the only thing that seemed important was who could drink the most beer. It wasn't exactly the sort of situation that Rachael thought she was going to meet her dream man in. Still, being a young single coed she kept her options open. "Say hi to Jeff."

"Will do," Andrea said breezing out the door, nearly colliding with a flustered freshman girl in the process.

Rachael reclined in her chair and sighed with contentment. If it wasn't for Andrea she likely would go insane living with all these freshmen who'd make so many stupid mistakes. Rachael reached over and opened a drawer in her desk and pulled out a Kit Kat bar which she unwrapped as she looked out her door. It was while she was munching on one chocolate covered wafers that she took the time to look through the flow of people into the room across from her. She'd already seen one of the inhabitants move in and determined it to be a room with a couple of guys in it. The one who had moved in had waved hello and introduced himself as Young briefly before taking off for a late lunch with his parents. It appeared that his roommate was now getting settled. This second occupant was a short, thin, kind of disheveled sort of guy. His parents were flitting about the room unpacking this and that in the usual bustle that was freshman move in. However, Rachael barely noticed them. She was interestedly observing this brown haired freshman boy. There was something about him. She couldn't place her finger on it…but it was definitely a good something.

Rachael recalled various conversations from last year in the dorms regarding "hallcest", the practice of dating someone who lived in your dorm. The most egregious form of this was dating someone who lived on your floor. Many frowned on it, plenty did it, and everyone had an opinion about it one way or the other. Rachael hadn't done it as a freshman…but right now she was thinking that it couldn't possibly be that bad of an idea.

She had a feeling she might skip that frat party and go to the dorm mixer after all.

The lounge of Morland Hall was packed full of freshmen who were meeting as many people as possible. In a sense it was just short of controlled chaos as people milled about introducing themselves, asking each other where they were from, what their major was, what floor they lived on, and other such banal details that this disparate group of people thrown together could discuss.

Kyle had met a few people, mainly some outgoing fellow freshmen who had approached him. They'd all seemed nice and a couple even lived on Kyle's floor. He was sure that he'd get to know them over the next few weeks. However, with the press of people, Kyle just felt like his thin body was lost in the crowd. He'd probably be better off going back to his room. Honestly, it had been such a big day with all the moving in and the goodbyes with his family that Kyle kind of just like to get some sleep. As he threaded through the crowd—one of the few ways that his thin frame was an asset—he noticed that there was a table with a variety of sodas on it. He figured since he was down here he might as well grab a free soda.

Isn't getting free food the national pastime of college students everywhere? Kyle thought as he made his way over to the table and grabbed a can of the generic cola from one of the coolers on a table.

"Hello."

Kyle looked up and saw brunette sitting on the other side of the table. She had pretty features and was smiling broadly.

"Hi," Kyle said.

"I'm Rachael," the girl said.

"I'm Kyle."

"Nice to meet you Kyle."

"Yeah, you too."

"So, what floor do you live on?"

"I'm on the second floor. How about you?"

"Me too! What a coincidence."

Kyle nodded. "Yeah."

"So, enjoying yourself?" Rachael asked.

"Yeah. Though I'm just dead tired," Kyle said, "Moving's exhausting stuff."

"I know! Doesn't matter how many times you do it, it's always a drag," Rachael said.

"Well, I'm going to get going now. I'm sure we'll run into each other later," Kyle said.

"I'm sure we will," Rachael said pleasantly, "I'll see you then, Kyle."

"All right, bye," Kyle said before leaving. He did not see the fact that Rachael's eyes followed him all the way out the door.

The semester got underway before anyone knew it and soon everyone was preoccupied with the hustle and bustle of the beginning of classes as bad courses were dropped and new, more awesome studies were picked up so people could make the unit minimum. By the time that was finished there was serious studying to be done for those who didn't want to get horribly behind to start the semester. Some freshmen ignored this pressing concern, but many did not as they realized very quickly that college wasn't a walk in the park. Kyle was one such student and he vigorously pursued his studies to keep up with the rapid pace of his classes.

However, supply and demand was not the only thing that Kyle was studying. Now that he had gotten settled at Redwood, Kyle realized that a new beginning wasn't such a bad thing. He had already made some new friends and was enjoying "life on his own", if you could call living in the dorms that. He also realized that this was a chance to become a new person if he wanted to change anything about himself. In all honesty, there wasn't much that he felt needed changing since he was pretty happy about who he was as a person, but that didn't mean there wasn't room for improvement. Unfortunately, there were certain things that couldn't be changed, like Kyle's height. That was something he'd just have to live with.

What he could change was his thin build. However, Kyle wasn't sure what the best way to do that was. However, these days the answer to just about any question was found on the Internet and Kyle had discovered that one of the quickest and easiest ways to do so was through weight gain powder. In retrospect, the answer seemed so obvious that he felt stupid that he hadn't thought of it himself. Kyle resolved that at the first chance he got he'd go to a diet supply store in the town that surrounded Redwood and buy some of this powder to see if it actually worked.

Across the hall, it had been an easy transition back to scholastic studies for the sophomores. Rachael had adjusted to the standards of collegiate academics during her freshman year so now it was just the same old routine. This routine naturally included plenty of snacks to keep her mind sharp, especially late at night when reading had to get done. For some reason potato chips really helped Racahel focus and she wasn't about to argue with a system that worked.

However, there was something else that had been troubling Rachael. That wiry cute boy that lived across the hall hadn't made an appearance since she'd met him at the mixer. Rachael and Andrea kept their door open whenever they weren't studying so anyone could pop in and say hello and shoot the breeze. It was actually amazing how many people would just hang out in the threshold of an open door when they too had nothing better to do. It was one of the best parts of dorm life and Rachael loved it.

Unfortunately, they didn't seem to share that philosophy across the hall. Young and Kyle hadn't even cracked open their door during the entire time that Rachael and Andrea had their's propped open. After a few days, Rachael would have said hello if she'd seen Kyle even step outside his room but she couldn't even catch him coming or going—not even to dinner. It seemed impossible that she should keep missing him when they lived right across the hall from each other.

It was really a shame because Rachael thought that she had decided that Kyle was quite cute indeed.

Kyle struggled up the stairs of his dorm. He had returned from his jaunt out to the local nutritional supply store where he had just purchased a large tub that was labeled "Rapid Gain X-Treme: The Best Way to Bulk Up!" Kyle didn't actually know if that was true, but he decided to buy it anyways. There was no way these things could be all that different from each other. Kyle wasn't exactly sure how much he was going to need, but he had a feeling it was going to be quite a bit, so he'd gotten the largest size the store had carried. Besides, it was much cheaper to buy in bulk, so he figured somehow he was saving money in the process.

Unfortunately, Kyle hadn't factored in how heavy it would be to carry the tub of powder all the way back to his dorm. You'd think this stuff would be light because it's just powder, but I'll be damned if this isn't like carrying bricks, Kyle thought, At least I'm almost there. Thank God.

Kyle fumbled around in his pocket, trying to find the keys to his room. The tub of powder was so heavy that it was actually hurting him to hold the handles of the plastic bag with only one of his hands. At least it wouldn't be for much—

THUD!

A sudden lightness in his left hand caused Alex to look down and see that his Rapid Gain X-Treme had pushed the plastic bag past its limits. It had ripped through the bottom of the bag and fallen to the floor. Once there it had rolled across the short hall and into the room across the way.

Just what I need. This is so embarrassing…

***

Rachael looked up from her book in response to a muffled thud outside her door. As she did so, she saw a large white container slowly roll through the door, across her room, and eventually come to a stop when it met her desk. She then looked to the door and saw that cute boy from across the hall poking his head in.

"Uh hi," Kyle said.

"Hello there! Long time no see! Lose something?" Rachael asked jovially.

Yes, I'll just—"

"Oh no, let me," Rachael said, getting off her bed and grabbing the heavy tub from the floor. She stood up and all of a sudden the nine inch height disparity between the two became incredibly obvious. Kyle craned his neck upwards to look at Rachael over the short distance and for her part Rachael inclined her head down so as to get a look at the diminutive boy. Neither said anything for a moment.

"Thanks," Kyle said.

"You're welcome," Rachael said, as she extended the tub across to Kyle. It was then that she caught a glimpse of the label. "Rapid Gain X-Treme? What is this stuff?"

"Oh it's nothing," Kyle said. Rachael didn't need to be super observant to notice that he was starting to turn red.

She examined the tub a little closer. "Weight gain powder…looking to bulk up a bit?"

The crimson was now reaching up to Kyle's cheeks. Rachael thought that the color looked good on him. "I…uh…" Kyle stammered before sighing, "Oh what's the use? Yeah. Look, it's just that I've always been so skinny I thought that maybe I should try to do something to change it."

Rachael couldn't help herself. She started laughing, much to the obvious surprise of Kyle. "What, what's so funny?" Kyle asked in confusion.

"I'm sorry," Rachael said, a big smile having replaced her laughter, "It's just that you freshmen really are so silly. If I were you I'd go return this immediately."

"Why?" Kyle said, still puzzled.

"Haven't you heard of the Freshman 15?" Rachael asked, "Half the freshmen get it once they come to Redwood. I know I did and I wasn't even trying." She patted her protuberant belly to make her point. "You don't need any silly weight gain powders to do that."

"Really?" Kyle asked.

"Hell no," Rachael said. That was when she suddenly got an idea about how she could get to know Kyle. With luck, he might just like her as a result. "You know…I could help you."

"You could?"

"Oh yeah. I could show you how to bulk up just by eating at the dining hall. It won't cost you anything you wouldn't have ordinarily spent," Rachael said, "You'll just make the most of your money. What do you say?"

Kyle looked at Rachael's body, surveying it. Though Rachael wasn't privy to his thoughts, she could tell that he was obviously sizing her up, thinking that perhaps this tubby girl knew what she was talking about. After all, she was as thick as she was for a reason. Rachael also thought that there might have been a glint of interest in his eye. It was exactly what she'd hoped to see there.

"Okay, I'm game," Kyle said, "I don't suppose there's any way I can repay you?"

I can think of a few things off the top of my head and none of them involve clothing… Rachael thought. She realized that her tongue had slipped out of her mouth to moisten her top lip and quickly drew it back. The tall brunette had a feeling that the action hadn't gone completely unnoticed. "Don't worry about that. You will," Rachael said simply with a smile and innuendo to spare. She then suddenly realized something. "Say, did I happen to notice you in Econ 5 yesterday?"

Kyle blinked. "Yeah, I am in there."

"Well that class gets out at noon, so I think we can begin tomorrow at lunch. Sound good?"

"Sounds great," Kyle said, "See you then."

"Bye bye Kyle," Rachael said.

Kyle retreated from Rachael's room to his, but couldn't resist throwing a look over his shoulder as he went through his door. As he did so, he found that Rachael was still looking at him with a bemused smile on her face.

As Kyle shut his door with a slight bit of embarrassment from being caught taking a second look Rachael thought to herself, This is going to be…what's the right word?…Delicious. Absolutely delicious.

An, I thought the freshman 15 was only a female thing? So is Kyle thinking 5' by 2' for himself, & Rachael is thinking 5' by 5' for him?
