Imperfections: What Make People Pretty

Wed Jul 15, 2009, 11:06 AM
So I recently came across a blog where someone wrote about their favorite celebrity body parts and it intrigued me. Before your mind jumps to the dirtiest conclusion possible, no not *those* body parts. This blogger was talking largely about facial characteristics, who he thought had the best skin, whose shortness was utterly adorable, things like that. It got me thinking, along with a conversation with a good friend of mine, about the topic, as well as the general aesthetics involved with his blog post.

See, the truth is that I realized a while back that there are all sorts of little things that can be absolutely and totally cute. They’re often not "perfect", but by virtue of the fact that they’re a little bit odd or off somehow, they actually *increase* someone’s attractiveness. It’s hard to explain, but it’s almost as if the fact that I find value in this odd body part makes them more special because they are differentiated from the beautiful people who all look the same. If you added them all together, it would look just downright ugly. It’s only as individual features that they have any beauty at all. I realize that this may not make the most amount of sense ever, but my first example is one that readers of my works should be familiar with, so hopefully that’ll help you catch my drift. Oh, and there are pretty pictures to at least attempt to give you an idea what I’m talking about too

1) Natalie Dormer’s nose [link]
The first time a friend showed me a picture of Natalie Dormer, he said, “Just ignore the resemblance to Miss Piggy.” And though I can’t get a good version of that picture to share with you (it was a promotional picture for season 1 of The Tudors with Dormer in a red dress), trust me when he wasn’t far from the truth. The camera angle was hardly flattering for Natalie. When I actually watched The Tudors, I thought there wasn’t much special about her. Admittedly, my anti-Anne Boleyn and pro-Catherine of Aragon bias might have had a teensy bit to do that. But after about four or five episodes—even I had to admit that Natalie Dormer was smoking. I could even overlook her nose. But, by about episode seven, I realized that it wasn’t that I was overlooking her nose—I *adored* her nose. The upturn of it was somehow beautiful and captivating. I was hooked not by Natalie’s eyes, which as Anne Boleyn were said to be “dark hooks to pull a man in”, but by her nose. Natalie Dormer was the first woman who I ever consciously saw who I looked at and said, “She’d be uglier if she didn’t have that imperfection”. So that groundwork being laid, let’s move on and hopefully be briefer, shall we?

2) Ginnifer Goodwin’s ears [link]
If she’s not on “Big Love” (which has one of the most entertaining title sequences—seen here: [link] seen in quite a while—even if the show is just a very well-written soap opera as my mother pointed out), you rarely see Ginnifer Goodwin’s ears. But when you do, man, she gives Barrack Obama a run for his money. There is something absolutely adorable about how big they are. Perhaps it’s a girl-next-door thing in that it seems all too ordinary of an imperfection, or maybe I’m just conflating the fact that Goodwin plays a real firecracker of a character on “Big Love” with her most prominent facial feature. Either way, I’ve fallen for her ears.

3) Kristen Bell’s mouth [link]
I am still trying to figure out what’s off about her mouth and I’ve been over this numerous times with friends. Every time I say that it’s too big, my mind immediately goes to Sean Connery in “From Russia With Love” saying that Tatiana Romanova’s mouth is “just the right size” (it should be noted I saw that movie so early in life that it took me a while to realize *exactly* what Bond was saying, or rather almost saying, there). The closest I can come to putting my finger on Kristen Bell’s mouth is that it’s a little too wide and a little squarer than it should be. And yet though that sounds ugly when you put it like that, it’s the only reason Kristen Bell stands out to me from what would otherwise be a sea of good looking blondes.

4) Dichen Lachman’s cheeks/facial structure
[link]
Like the rest of the world, Dichen Lachman was a nonentity to me until she showed up on Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse”. From the first moment when she was really featured in the third episode, I was captivated by her face, and it’s largely because of the angle of her cheekbones. There’s something about the way her face so sharply draws to a point at her chin that’s just amazing. I could also give a shout out to her for her nose, which is impossibly thin, but her facial structure is just incredible.

5) Tina Fey’s glasses [link]
Frankly, I don’t think that Tina Fey is as good looking when she takes her glasses off as when she has them on. Whenever she gets dolled up for a scene on “30 Rock”, she doesn’t look anywhere as good as when she’s regular Liz Lemon who’s in damage control mode. I’ve always contended that a woman in the right glasses is vastly more attractive than she would be without them, but Fey is just the epitome of this.

6) Tina Majorino’s forehead [link]
As a dear, dear friend of mine who I used to room with would say, this girl’s got a fivehead. Get it? Yeah, the joke’s a little lame, but I still use it from time to time. Now, I’m not a Napoleon Dynamite fan (not seeing it the whole way through is a slight impediment to liking a movie), but—as established earlier—I am a “Big Love” fan and Tina Majorino plays a character I love, mainly because my life experiences cause me to find her totally hilarious. But Tina’s got this “girl next door, and not the really hot type, but the regular type” thing going on. She actually seems like someone who I could realistically meet randomly one day. Part of it has to do with her large forehead. I’ve known a number of women with them and there’s something a little endearing about it.

I could probably list more, but that’s a good starter list. So be on the lookout in my stories for people’s little quirks. Maybe that’ll make them all the more real and the more beautiful. ;)

I’ll open it up to all of you—who do you look at and see an imperfection that’s in reality endearing? As a friend of mine said, “It’s the flaws that make someone their wonderful, beautiful self”. Oh yeah, and there's a poll.

Ah, yes! Nice to see you here! You'll find all of my work that's on Dimensions here...but not edited! Yes, that's right, there are compromises that sometimes must be made to have your work in the Library. Their site, so their rules, and I accept that. You'll even find one story in my library here that's not even on Dimensions. ;)
    Thanks for the favs.
You are most welcome! I haven't read the Kelly Clarkson story yet, but I have been thinking that she's a prime target for just such a thing, so I'm hoping to indulge in it soon!
